Explanation

  • The Revolt began in Meerut, 58 kms from Delhi, on 10th May, 1857 and then it spread across North India. On 24th April, 90 men of the 3rd native cavalry refused to accept the greased cartridges. On 9th May, 85 of them were dismissed, sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment. This sparked off a general mutiny among the Indian soldiers stationed at Meerut.
  • The Meerut soldiers set off for Delhi and were joined by the local infantry. They killed the European officers and seized the city. The rebellious soldiers then proclaimed Bahadur Shah, the emperor of India making him the symbol of the Revolt. By proclaiming Bahadur Shah as the emperor, the sepoys had transformed the mutiny of soldiers into a revolutionary war.
  • Much of the strength of the Revolt lay in the Hindu-Muslim unity. There was complete co-operation between the Hindus and Muslims, wherein all the rebels recognized Bahadur Shah, a Muslim ruler, as their emperor. Both the Hindu and Muslim soldiers respected each other’s sentiments.
  • The modern educated Indians, however, did not support the Revolt as they were repelled by the rebel’s appeal to superstitions and their opposition to progressive social measures.
