Explanation

  • Under the Ryotwari Settlement the cultivator was to be recognized as the owner of his plot of land, subject to the payment of land revenue. It was introduced in the parts of Madras and Bombay Presidencies in the 19th century. The land revenue under this system was fixed at very high rates, which left the ryot with bare maintenance.
  • The Mahalwari system was to be made from village to village or estate (mahal) with landlords or heads of families, who collectively claimed to be landlords of the village or the estate.
  • In Mahalwari areas, the land revenue was to be revised periodically. It was introduced in the Ganga valley, North-West provinces, parts of Central India and Punjab.
