Mahila Samakhya (MS), an externally aided project for women’s empowerment, was started with Dutch assistance in 1989. Since 2005–06, it is being funded by the Government of India. The programme endeavours to create an environment for women to learn at their own pace, set their own priorities, and seek knowledge and information to make informed choices. It has strengthened women’s abilities to effectively participate in village level education programmes.
