Explanation

  • Depending upon its source and utilization, energy can be divided into two broad classes, viz., (i) traditional or non-commercial; and (ii) commercial energy. The non-commercial energy includes fire-wood, charcoal, cow dung, agricultural wastes and also animal power. The commercial sources of energy comprise coal, oil, natural gas, hydro-electricity, nuclear power, as well as wind and solar power.
  • The only known reserves of anthracite coal in India are found in Jammu & Kashmir and not in Jharkhand and Odisha. Anthracite is called as the best grade coal or hard coal with carbon percentage varying from 80 –95%. It is found only in some parts of Jammu Kashmir in India. The rest India imports from Australia.
  • Gondwana coal contributes overwhelmingly large proportion of both the reserves and production of coal, accounting for 98 per cent of the total reserves and 99 per cent of the production of coal in India.
